How to Prepare Chinese-style Stir-Fried Vegetables with Tofu

If you're craving a wholesome and flavorful meal, learning how to prepare Chinese-style stir-fried vegetables with tofu is an excellent option. This dish not only offers a delightful mix of textures and flavors but also embraces the health benefits of fresh vegetables and plant-based protein.

To begin, gather your ingredients. You'll need:

  • 1 block of firm tofu, drained and pressed
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil (or vegetable oil)
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1-inch piece of ginger, grated
  • 1 bell pepper, sliced
  • 1 cup broccoli florets
  • 1 cup snap peas
  • 1 medium carrot, julienned
  • 2 green onions, chopped
  • Optional: 1 tablespoon cornstarch (for crispy tofu)

Follow these steps for a delicious stir-fry:

Step 1: Prepare the Tofu

Start by cutting the block of tofu into bite-sized cubes. For a crispier texture, toss the tofu cubes in cornstarch. This step is optional but highly recommended for added crunch during frying.

Step 2: Heat the Pan

In a large non-stick skillet or wok, heat the sesame oil over medium-high heat. Once the oil is hot, carefully add the tofu cubes. Fry them until golden brown on all sides, about 8–10 minutes. Once done, remove the tofu from the pan and set it aside.

Step 3: Stir-Fry the Vegetables

In the same skillet, add a little more oil if necessary. Begin by adding the minced garlic and grated ginger, stirring for about 30 seconds until fragrant. Then, add the sliced bell pepper, broccoli, snap peas, and julienned carrots. Stir-fry the vegetables for approximately 5-7 minutes, or until they are tender yet still crisp.

Step 4: Combine Tofu and Vegetables

Once the vegetables are cooked to your liking, return the browned tofu to the pan. Drizzle the soy sauce over the mixture, and stir gently to combine everything well. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.

Step 5: Finish and Serve

Finally, add the chopped green onions right before serving. This dish can be enjoyed on its own or with steamed rice or noodles for a more filling meal. Don’t forget to adjust the soy sauce according to your taste, adding more as desired.

With this simple recipe, you can savor the deliciousness of Chinese-style stir-fried vegetables with tofu in the comfort of your home. It's a quick and nutritious meal that's perfect for busy weeknights or as a comforting vegetarian option any time.

Enjoy your homemade stir-fried vegetables with tofu and experiment with different veggies according to your preference! Happy cooking!
